Harnessing microbiology to tackle global challenges

Part of

Biography

I have 30-year expertise in the molecular studies of carbohydrate-protein recognition in relation to gut biology, gut microbiology and food biotechnology. Since joining the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) in 2007, I lead a Research Group focusing on the Glycobiology of Host-Microbe interactions in the gut. I am also QIB Deputy Chief Scientific Officer, honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia (Norwich) and an elected fellow of the UK Royal Society of Biology.

My Lab is interested in the role of host (mucins), dietary (HMOs, RFOs, GOS) and microbial glycans (EPS, LPS) in host-microbe interactions in the gut using a combination of approaches and experimental models including gut organoid-on-chip systems. My previous research, conducted at Marseille University (France) and Carlsberg Research Institute (Copenhagen, Denmark), focused on the structure-function relationships of plant and microbial carbohydrate-active enzymes and their potential biotechnological application. Our Lab is involved in initiatives promoting Glycosciences for next-generation of scientists in Europe.
