Harnessing microbiology to tackle global challenges

Our mission and vision

To harness the huge breadth and capacity of our microbiology expertise within the extensive community at Norwich Research Park to solve global challenges in food security, human health and climate change.

We aim to drive high-quality research and innovation with positive real-world impacts through studying microbial interactions across varied disciplines and scales.

Our approach

We take a multi-disciplinary approach, working collaboratively with microbiologists and other researchers both on and off Norwich Research Park.

We will share our knowledge and expertise to nurture future research discoveries and achieve the best outcomes for our planet and the people who live on it.

Our established infrastructure and collaborative culture at Norwich Research Park provide an excellent platform to train the next generation of microbiologists and forge new partnerships.

Our values

Real-world impact – helping to solve some of the most complex and threatening global problems and grand challenges in the fields of medicine, agriculture, food, energy and climate change

Inclusive and nurturing – encouraging diverse representation and engagement through nurturing people, partnerships, ideas and concepts

Excellence and integrity – honing our expertise, providing leadership and empowering people to do what they do best whilst working to the highest standards

Collaboration – taking a cross-disciplinary and cross-organisational approach with internal and external partners, working as a team to find the best solutions and make the most of our critical mass

Our history

Our story began in 2017 with the launch of Microbes in Norwich (or MICRON), a network of microbiologists that came together for biennial meetings to build relationships and share knowledge across Norwich Research Park.

As membership and interest grew, we realised the potential for a more formal body that fostered internal and external collaboration – with capacity to regularly showcase the strength and breadth of our microbiology research, teaching and scientific facilities.

The Centre for Microbial Interactions was officially launched in September 2024 with a new brand identity and website.
